Wang Tao inexplicably felt a bit warm in the face.
“Don’t thank me; it was actually Captain Hua who asked me to bring these.”
Just then, the door of the off-road vehicle opened.
Jiang Hua walked in.
Tong Sui looked up, her eyes crinkling with a smile as she looked at him. “Captain Hua, thank you for bringing me the books; they’re very useful!”
Jiang Hua’s expression froze for a second before he awkwardly turned his face away and responded with a flat “hm.”
He glanced at Wang Tao.
Wang Tao rubbed his head and chuckled, “Captain Hua, don’t blame me for mentioning it; you asked me to bring these books. I can’t just take all the credit for it.”
Tong Sui organized the books by category, filling up both the trunk and the empty space beside the seat with them.
At that moment, Zhang Binyu also got into the vehicle. Seeing so many books, he exclaimed, “Wow, who did all this? No wonder I didn’t see a single book when I went up to the fourth floor.”
Wang Tao pointed back with his chin.
Zhang Binyu understood immediately, saying, “With Captain Hua around, it looks like I won’t need to worry next time.”
Just then, Jian Lexian took his seat in the vehicle.
The atmosphere instantly turned silent as Wang Tao and Zhang Binyu silently adjusted their seats and weapons.
Jian Lexian opened his mouth, intending to explain something.
From the driver’s seat, Wang Tao said, “It’s getting late; let’s set off.”
“Yes, yes, yes. Let’s hurry up and leave,” Zhang Binyu added, “What if something falls down again while we’re here?”
After a brief rest, the off-road vehicle set off again.
They needed to find a place to spend the night.
The denser the population and buildings, the more dangerous it became, with greater uncertainty.
They would try to choose houses in the suburbs.
The off-road vehicle drove slowly.
Tong Sui picked up one of the books and read it seriously.
Jiang Hua closed his eyes for a short nap.
Inside the vehicle, the only sound was Tong Sui flipping through the pages, her rapid reading catching Zhang Binyu’s attention from the front seat.
He turned his head and whispered, “Tong Sui, you’re reading so fast; can you really understand it?”
Tong Sui paused her flipping and nodded.
Before binding with the system, she had been an excellent student, and with the original owner’s knowledge in her mind, these contents were not difficult for her.
Zhang Binyu clicked his tongue in amazement.
Seeing Tong Sui so effortlessly engaged, he casually grabbed a book himself but started to feel dizzy after flipping just a couple of pages.
“This is way too tedious.”
He tossed the book aside and fell into a deep sleep.
Tong Sui was quiet while reading; apart from turning the pages, she didn’t make any extra sounds.
Seated in the passenger seat, Jian Lexian looked up and through the rearview mirror at Tong Sui in the back seat.
He smirked coldly in his heart.
Although he had died in the jaws of zombies in his previous life, he had never heard of anyone researching a zombie antidote.
No matter how hard Tong Sui tried, it would only be a futile effort.
After the off-road vehicle traveled a certain distance, the surrounding buildings were visibly fewer.
They chose a self-built house this time.
After the vehicle stopped, the team members entered to clear out the remaining zombies.
Tong Sui was still reading her book when someone called her several times before she reacted, sluggishly hugging a few books as she got out of the vehicle.
The tired team members had either gone upstairs to rest or were preparing dinner.
Tong Sui sat in the hall, continuing to read by the flickering candlelight. The warm yellow light fell on her as she occasionally blinked, her flipping motion never ceasing.
After dinner was prepared, Tong Sui remained curled up by the candlelight, seemingly enchanted by the power of the book in her hands.
Jiang Hua walked over.
The warm flames added a glossy sheen to him, making him appear cozy, like melted butter.
Jiang Hua reached out, his cool fingertips touching her cheek.
Warm.
Tong Sui was too close; her cheek absorbed the warmth, and it took her a couple of seconds to glance up at him.
Even through the lens of his glasses, one could still see the surprised and bewildered look in his eyes.
Jiang Hua withdrew his hand. “Time to eat.”
“Oh.”
Tong Sui closed the book, feeling a bit stiff from sitting all day, and stretched.
The hem of her shirt, tucked at the waist, slipped out with her stretching motion, revealing a section of her fair and supple waist.
Jiang Hua gazed at her intently.
So delicate, it seemed one hand could easily grasp it firmly.
His fingertips gently brushed over the spot where he had felt Tong Sui’s warm, smooth cheek; he wondered if the texture was the same.
Tonight’s meal was similar to the previous night’s.
Tong Sui ate slightly more than the day before and got up to head upstairs afterward.
After taking a shower, she draped a towel over her damp hair and sat on the bed to continue reading.
The system said: [You’ve been reading all day; aren’t you bored?]
Tong Sui flipped through the pages as she replied, “Aren’t you tired of watching so many childish cartoons before?”
The system huffed, [I don’t watch those anymore! Now I’m watching idol dramas!]
Tong Sui: “……”
According to the original plot, after Jiang Hua fell into the hands of the research team, he was confined in the room with the highest security level.
Every day, he would have a significant amount of blood drawn for research and even have parts of his body cut off directly for experiments.
If she wanted to alter the original story, she had to develop an antidote for the zombies without harming Jiang Hua in the process.
Moreover, Tong Sui must keep this information a secret and rely solely on herself.
After Jiang Hua returned to his room, he lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling for a while before inexplicably pushing the door open and stepping onto the balcony.
The moonlight was desolate.
He did not see the person he wanted to meet.
Jiang Hua clicked his tongue and pulled out a new pack of cigarettes, opened it, and lit one.
